When I was at ECU in NC, circa 1974, a the physics department was planning to reenact Galileo's gravity demo, and one of the masses planned to be dropped off the 4th floor of the physics building was an unearthed civil war cannon ball. Beforehand, a prof took it by the ROTC department to show it off, figuring they'd be interested in a war relic. An officer recognized the ball as a type that was not solid but one that was hollow and to be filled with powder - the EOD team found that it was still full of old powder!
