I know one or two of you are interested in military archeology, which we
might simply define
as looking for interesting junk laying about.
ARCHAEOLOGY magazine for Mar-Apr 2015 has this article, "Defuzing the Past -
Unexploded
ordnance from WWII is a risk for the people of the Marshall Islands - and a
challenge for
achaeologists. *
Unfortunately yet another acronym is rolled out - "ERW" - "explosive
remnants of war".
On inhabited atolls, unexploded US and Japanese ordnance needs removal as
it's still dangerous.
Bombs up to 650 lbs.; some buried in beach sand, with fuses facing up, set
as some kind of
land mines by the Japanese. Some ordnance too dangerous to move; has to be
sandbagged for
destruction in place.
Interesting, I thought. 7 pages, photos.
