Maybe this is a bit off topic, but a great true war story involving a shattered B-17's return home is in the book "A Higher Call". Most of the book relates the personal history of a German fighter pilot, how he came to encounter the B-17, and what happened later, before & after the war's end.

Last summer My Darling wife give me a once in a lifetime gift. She took
me to our local airport where two old war birds were flying and purchase
a ride for me on a B-17G named the " Nine O Nine ". This plane is being
fully restored, and is being funded by give rides. The flight lasted
about and hour. We flew out of Ailair Air port in Wall Township, Monmouth
County NJ. Flew to the coast then south to around the Barnegat Light
House then turned north and back to the air field. For take off I was
seated at the radio station, during the flight we were able to move about
the plane. So I made my way up threw the bomb bay and to get into the
nose. Took some video and a lot of still shoots. After the flight I stood
in awe looking at the plane and realizing how many young men rode this
type of plane into the history books. God Bless Them All.
