I've done a 'little' avionics design work on commercial and military aircraft. Our motto, so to speak, was 'ground is ground'. All negative (battery and power supply) terminals and chassis were connected to the aircraft airframe. (We might have gotten into a lot of trouble if we decided to do otherwise...)
