Sorry, but you are either too young to know or avoided going but as 
recently as 1968, a small package of I think four cigarettes (usually either Camels 
or Lucky Strike as I recall) was a standard component of all C-Ration 
packages.  The Socialists didn't run things in those days.  I'm not sure about 
K-Rations as I never had to live on them.  And cigarette smoke wouldn't be any 
worse than cooking fires (no propane bottles or Canned Heat (Sterno) in 
those days).
