True but can't you set your email preferences to delete photos in the reply message?
Other lists I subscribe to only seem to have an issue when the photo is not sized properly, it doesn't take all that much effort to re-size a photo and as already mentioned, smart phones ask if you really want to send a full resolution photo.

Hi Hue,
Just to add to Todd's comments the list would suffer more than it does
now from replies with long tails and and multiple copies of the same
original following text messages - "me too", "yeah but", etc and each
containing an additional copy of the image. Of course..that would more
quickly reach and exceed the limit, but shouldn't be ignored.
