Sorry I got into this discussion late but I've been traveling.

You never get the real story on the effectiveness of a system.

If the system didn't work you did not want the enemy, or the people back home, to know that fact. If it was effective you did not give out any information about the success rate.

A good example was the Patriot missile defense during the first Gulf War. It was not that effective; the missiles aimed at Israel were breaking up in flight. The Israelis and Americans hid that fact until after the conflict.

The hype about the Norden Bomb Sight also deflected attention away form the development and deployment of Microwave Radar during WW2.

Hi Eugene:

The Norden bomb sight was a marketing win rather than an actual thing that was important.
It used a DC motor with carbon brushes that contaminated the bearings and overall was not that accurate, which is the 
case for all dumb bombs.
