Sorry, Jack...no help from me. I've never fired up my RF-301. I've heard they can be tempermental to align and are prone to spurious emissions. Perhaps I'll get a chance to do something with mine in 2016.
Mine is the US Navy version...the AN/URC-58. I guess it must have worked OK, but it doesn't look all that suited for the heat and humidity of the Mekong. I bought it to round out my collection of communications gear carried on Viet Nam PCF "Swift" boats:
AN/URC-58 MF/HF-USB/LSB//AM/CW (Only USB used)
AN/VRC-46 VHF-FM
AN/PRC-41 UHF-AM
AN/PRC-9 VHF-FM
AN/PRC-25 VHF-FM
AN/URC-4 VHF/UHF-AM
My friends who crewed VN PCFs say the AN/URC-58 was very seldom used. The AN/VRC-46 was the important set. The PBRs did not carry the AN/URC-58, but carried two AN/VRC-46 sets.
I don't know where the AN/GRC-165 was used. I remember when Fair Radio was selling complete sets 25 years ago.
