[Milsurplus] Education needed

I have found an older Collins Radio manual for a 50L-1 receiver. It is a
UHF (covering most of the frequency range of the now UHF 200-400 MHz band)
receiver but it is airborne FM. It mounts in a shock mount and uses the
614N-2 control head. It is a little smaller than the ARR-41, and in a more
robust case.

I heard talk that it was part of some data system and made shortly after WW
2. The program might have had a name like SAGE, but I can find no sign of
it.

Does someone out there know what this radio did and where it fit in the
grand scheme of things?

Anyone have one?
