Here's a couple of stories about UPS:

If you have a package that is 1/4 inch over the dimensions stated on the carton (for instance a Lowe's 16 X 12 X 12 box), you get banged for the next inch up. If the top or sides bulge, the box becomes something like 17 X 13 X 13. Heavier stuff doesn't seem to incur more charge, but lighter packages get you in trouble. Also, it doesn't matter how light a box is, you pay the CEO of UPS part of his 5 million dollar salary, anyway. I had a customer tell me to send a one-pound box by UPS. Cost would have been $14.78 by ground. It went by Post Office, $5.25.
