There will probably be a lot of reasons why you shouldn't
do this, but here is what I did on my RAS-2.
A friend of mine found this in the town dump, when I was in
high school, and sold it to me for 20 bucks. I've been hauling
it around ever since. About 10 years ago, I decided to see if
I could make it look a bit better. The paint had a greyish
cast to it.
Pulled the panel off the radio, but did not disassemble the
coil set container or power supply. Also removed all the
nameplates.
(Never did find a speaker panel for the set. Anyone have one they'd like
to sell???)
I used a slurry of Boraxo hand soap powder and a toothbrush, and did
about a 6" square at a time, making sure I didn't splash slurry all
over the place. Then rinsed and dried each square at a time.
Still looks good, no funny corrosion or discoloration.
