Lots of suggestions here, personally I don't like the idea
of using caustic chemicals on radios. It requires too much
flushing to rinse it off afterwards and if you missed some
it's likely going to come back and bite you later.
Years ago I read in an old early 50s ham tips or something
like that a solution for old graying black wrinkle paint.
Their suggestion was to clean the surface to remove and loose
dirt and oils using mild soap.
Then get black paint, thin it down until it's about like
water, put some in a bowl and using a wad of cloth make a
ball, dip it in the thinned paint and then rub it onto the
old wrinkle paint. What you want to do is apply color but
no thickness of paint which will fill in the wrinkle.
I've tired it and it works.
A version of this I found works great is using a gloss black
paint pen, I keep a wad of paper towel in one hand and do
a few square inches at a time, use the pumping tip of the
paint pen and pump out some paint onto the surface and then
work it around to cover a small area, a few square inches.
After letting it sit a couple minutes take the paper towel
and pat the surface to remove the bulk of the paint, then
wipe off, when you move to paint the next section let it
overlap the first section and then wipe it off wiping over
both areas to blend them together.
It's a little labor intensive, if you need instant gratification
this isn't for you, but it works.
I collect Clough-Brengle equipment both their test equipment
and the transmitters they built for the CCC. I've recolored
a bunch of them and it always looks great.
