The battery charging generator was PE-210-(*). But my best guess on it's
introduction is 1943. SCR-284 was first fielded in 1942.
The PE-162 was originally built for AN/TRC-2 and SCR-694-C, probably early
1944 as the -B model came out mid 1945. It did not have capability to run
the SCR-284. Both PE-162-A and PE-162-B originally had that capability. I
haven't pinned down the date of the MWO that removed the capability from
PE-162-B but estimate it to have been in 1951 around the time that the PE-162-C
came out. Estimate based on 1950 DA PAM 310 which doesn't show it but lists
MWO's back to 1945. And 1958 DA PAM 310 which doesn't show it but it lists
MWO's back to 1952.
Hue, on the original subject, if you are going to use a PE-103 and PE-104
to run the radio with a lugged along battery, you might want to keep the
FM-41-A as the PE-103 is quite top heavy and the shock mounts on the bottom of
it weren't designed to keep it upright. There are four rubber bumpers in the
FM-41 that do this. Keying the transmitter in voice starts the dynamotor
(because the receiver runs off of PE-104) and could turn the dynamotor over
if something (including the operator's hand) isn't present to prevent it. Or
you would want to build a base more or less similar to the lower half of
the FM-41.
