[Milsurplus] Mystery Navy? SSB receiver with AFC

Thanks  I had heard of the R-3 but didn't know any details. Yeah the CV-157 similarity struck me too. I wonder if this was the prototype Hoffman rcvr? But that would be an odd choice for "typical". 
And 10-30 mc coverage. That seems strange too.
