More seriously, the Cannon connectors of the time have the prettiest light gray color you can imagine.  Media blasting brings it back very nicely, and it will stay that way for years in an air conditioned environment.  http://aafradio.org/flightdeck/ARB.jpg has an example - note the right hand connector.

Perhaps more accurately, Aluminum Jelly contains phosphoric acid.  The enchants I was referring to are usually a blend of several ingredients, and basically have the consistency and transparency of water.  They share the phosphoric acid ingredient but are not like Aluminum Jelly in their strength.
