If it is possible to get the chassis and anything sensitive to moisture
out, drill through the length of the battery with a bit that won't hit
the case, then put the case into a pan of very hot water with detergent
and let everything soak overnight. I used this method to get D cells out
of an R-1518 case, the electrolyte paste dissolved into slush, the zinc
cans collapsed easily, and the cardboard wrappers turned to pulp. A
dull table knife is great for digging everything out, it gets the paper
but won't cut into the aluminum, messy but effective. Older miltary
batteries were often coated with wax, it may have melted/migrated out of
the cardboard wrapper and bonded it to the case. If this has happened,
put the case into an oven at 200 degreees for a while, them take it out
and quickly scrape the remains of the wax and paper out. The final wax
residue can be cleaned out with mineral spirits, stoddard solvent, or
gasoline (outdoors away from everything only!). I have removed stuck
batteries from metal cases such as PRC-10s this way for many years with
good results.
