The internals of the battery are held together with tar.
I once easily removed the tar-potted insides of a big
audio output transformer with a carefully-applied 
propane torch.  I removed the end plates, clamped the
case and kept the flame moving quickly to evenly heat
the case.  This softened the tar and the goop fell out 
with a gentle push from a stick
without blistering any of the case paint.  
Remove everything from the case.
Hold the case with a clamp or vise grip.
Get the case hot enough to soften the tar and push
the mess out the end with a stick.  Worked excellent for me.
