I think that somebody needs to actually take a look at the data. The press tends to go a bit silly about this sort of thing. Unless it’s the equivalent of a lightning strike to your house, it’s not going to be anywhere near as bad as they are suggesting. Most of our mil gear (tube or solid state) is in the “survive” category for a fairly wide range of events. Except for truly unusual gear, it’s not got anything overly fancy protecting it. I doubt the cited event would deliver enough energy to knock out a cell tower that survives lighting hits on a regular basis ….
