Hue,
There are LED bulbs available which are direct replacements for the range of
standard indicator/pilot light bulbs, and the common base styles.
I successfully relamped (I forgot the bulb number, but they're bayonet, 12
V) one of my Canadian Marconi CSR-5 Royal Canadian Navy receivers with such
LED bulbs. The bulbs are good for AC, as they're direct replacement. They
work great, the dial is much brighter than with the original incandescent
bulbs. The difference is that the light looks bluer in comparison (the LED's
I used are listed as white) with the original dial lights. The price is
under $5 a bulb in single quantity, and they'll probably last longer than
the radio... The current draw is also miniscule.
Here is for example one vendor - I'm sure cheaper prices can be found:

I bought mine at least 5 years ago from a vendor I forgot the link to, for
$3 a pop.
Maybe it'd be worthwile for you to explore that avenue.

Well Bill, i done thought about those points also. The light switch is
momentary
contact. I am really into lighted dials, tho, so i was thinking of putting a
small
switch inside so i could pull out the rec section and switch lamp to always
on.
The majority of my use would be from AC mains PS safe in secured territory.
Yes,
the flashlight bulbs do have much shorter life, which may be a service issue
for those of you going out on LRPs. I thought of fixing up an ammo belt with
flashlight bulbs instead of cartridges.
