Turns out this recently arrived manual is for the BC-197 receiver, of which my friend has a 
pretty rusty crusty example. Perhaps with the supplement of info from the manual to the 
free offer of this receiver, we can find some member of the local antique radio club willing
and brave to take on the restoration.
Turns out its approx 100 - 1000 kHz TRF, 3 stages RF, with separate ganged BFO.
I assume for Army point to point radio sites, such as in Alaska, where there was heavy
dependence on use of LW, i believe ( having seen early WW2 docs that indicate purchase
of Mackay 128 LF receivers for Alaska use. )
