Addendum:  The Aether theory was disproved by the Michaelson-Morley 
experiment, and latest thinking of the cognoscenti is it's Zero-Point 
Energy, (Nullpunktenergie) which occurs in empty space. Zero-Point 
Energy is a corollary of String Theory, which is supposed to explain 
life, the universe, and everything.  String Theory has critics; Richard 
Fenyman said it is a failure as a theory of everything.

Really, we shouldn't be corrupting callow ignorant youth.....
