I don't know of any reliable source that says these changes were made
"in the field" in the sense of some front-line radio tech cranking them
out.  I'd guess that some shop was set up with the appropriate tuning
assemblies containing L1/L2/L3, 100k-ohm resistors, and alignment
gear, plus a stack of altered manuals to pack with each modified set.
The sets then would be purposefully dispatched to the intended users.
It is interesting that the intended users appear to have been US Army
personnel of some sort...including POWs, if we may put credence to that.
