You are correct, the old CEI/W-J tuneable VHF/UHF receivers used Mallory
inductuners. Other manufacturers of similar, contemporary receivers
used them as well. Probably a couple of hundred thousand of them were
manufactured for use in the AN/VRC-12 family radios (RT-246, RT-524,
R-442, and ARC-131). They were very reliable in these non-scanning
applications. I'm unaware of any serious problems with them in scanning
applications...
