Yes and no.
What if there is a delay in turning one or the other on or off? Then you could
get the full voltage across one of them. And you have to deal with isolation,
separate gate drivers, etc.
High voltage parts are getting inexpensive. Here's an example of a 1000 volt
part, about $6:
