Perry shed a lot of light on the question.

  I will add an anecdote about a member of a Marine Band(there are many)
who along with his entire band was shipped to Afghanistan where their
instruments remained in storage for almost the entire deployment while they
worked security in the Green Zone.  He said they did get the instruments
out once for a performance for a visiting dignitary.  Anyway, even if all
their watches were quiet, this would qualify for an Afghanistan Campaign
Medal.

PS, the Liberty Bell March can put one in a silly mood (a la Monty Python)
at which point one starts to ponder things like the Meritorious Solo Medal,
or the Distinguished Rhythm Cross.
