One of the authors of "Warday," Whitley Strieber, also wrote "Communion" plus a couple of sequels, ostensibly about true events. Also equally off-topic is the BBC-TV movie from 1965 - "The War Game." The video is available from the usual Intergoogle sources.

Let me recommend a creditable narrative of how a
"limited nuclear war," most of which didn't come-off
and "went out like a carelessly struck match,"
could have played-out, including the aftermath years later.
Ignore any prejudices about the authors
and find a copy of the novel "WARDAY."
Written in 1984 and dated, but it's still an excellent "alternate history."
You might get a chill reading about the U.K. "Sub-Poppers," Mike.

Here is a wiki summary, but I recommend
a snifter of brandy and an easy chair for a weekend.
You'll be glad we haven't fought that war.... yet.
