NRL Report 8300, "Evolution of Naval Radio-Electronics and Contributions
of the Naval Research Laboratory" dated 1979, has this: "The word
"radar" was coined from "radio detection and ranging", one of the titles
used by NRL for this field of work, by LCDR F. R. Furth and LCDR S. M.
Tucker (both who later became RADM), who shared in responsibility for
the Navy's original procurement program." In the book there is a copy
of a letter signed by the CNO on 18 Nov 1940 that made the term official.
My wife and I enjoyed Foyle's War so much we ordered the entire series.
