There was a version of the B-17 using
inline Allison V-1710s instead of the radials, but
only two were built. It was designated the XB-38.
I think it would have been interesting to see how
well the Allison would have fared in the type of
combat flying the B-17 did. I'm thinking that the
cooling systems would have been too vulnerable
to flak damage.
There was also at least one postwar test bed using a B-17 with
a turboprop mounted in the nose and I seem to recall another
test bed with a turbojet slung underneath the bomb bay.
