It looks more like a wave-meter. Different plug in coils for different
bands. Of course the meter is missing and an on/off switch added was added.

I did not see any reference to DF. Furthermore it's much too simple a piece
for a DF set, and a DF set for VHF would seem to have limited application
for Japan, especially a self contained one. Having seen several pieces of
test or training equipment of the same size and similar construction, I
