In the late 1970's, I had taken apart several of the electret microphones.
The "microphone" component was about 1mm square, maybe smaller. It looked
like a transistor. It has three leads, the center, from what I recall was
soldered to a brass disk that acted as the diaphragm.
His best bet may be to search ebay for "SMD microphone".
Just did a quick search on google, found several images of SMD mics in the
fractions of mm size, mic, amplifier, packaging, four soldering tabs,
.3-.5mm or so. One was shown next to a 0.1mm pen tip, it was about three
times larger in width, about double that in length, so, it seems VERY
possible to find what he needs.
