I think your going to find that a straight forward auction is the only 
thing that makes sense.  You advertise, that's easy and inexpensive on 
the web.  The interested parties show up on the appointed day, bid on 
the material, and HAUL IT AWAY.  You can assign reserves to stuff you 
feel is really valuable.

I'm assuming the museum is a largely volunteer affair.  The manpower 
required to manage hundreds of E-bay auctions, not to mention packing 
and shipping is going to be a nightmare

My condolences to anyone who is "screwed" because they can't show up.  
They'll have a chance to buy the stuff from the dealers who do show up, 
and buy tonnage.
