[Milsurplus] Re; Modified APS-13 radar units & Yagi antennas in first A-bombs

The ultimate reference on the modified APS-13 units & specially fabricated Yagi antennas is to be found in John Coster-Mullen's self-published 'Atom Bombs - The Top secret Inside Story of Little Boy and Fat Man.' (2011) (No ISBN) (Available from Amazon).

The bombs did not use the standard issue AS-62 Yagis but specially designed & fabricated units. In the photo of the top of one of the modified unit with the cover removed a can next to the dynamotor has been hand labeled 'Gate Forming Line.' This is a thick book & I can't readily find the reference to this mod. Each unit was also specially calibrated as far as altitude to initiate the trigger circuit went.

My copy is autographed. He sent me some hi-res pix of the APS-13s which I posted in the Vintage Military Radar Group on Yahoo where you will also find my pix of my NOS example of the APS-13 made by RCA in Camden, NJ.

Anyone interested in these matters should get a copy of this encyclopedic study of all aspects of early A-bomb development & technology.

Jack

That bears no similarity at all to the four units that were used.

It has already been pointed out that four AN/APS-13 units (RT-34/APS-13,
made by both RCA and GE) were used in the altitude radar triggering system.
The stock RT-34 operates around 450 MHz, 450 watts peak pulsed, from two small
6J6 tubes.  These four sets used in the triggering system had to be altered
in frequency of operation to prevent mutual interference.  The small antennas
seen on the bombs are AS-62/APS-13 units.

Does anybody have a handy-dandy table of APR-$ and RDO versions and TN-xx
plug-ins and which is compatible with what and their features/differences?

Also, are there any other versions of the APR-4, other than the -4Y?
Finally, roughly when did the -4Y enter service?

Thanks,

-John

I want to thank all that replied to my question . I have a couple of leads
and I now know that there were at least some produced. I have never failed
to get the help I need from the list members.
