we had the recorders form Luke AFB at the transmitter site and we were
responsible for cleaning heads and changing tapes!

The RD-142 was for recording air traffic control facilities
such as control tower etc. They did not work very well
because of the way the four heads which traveled across
the tape couldn't be properly adjusted. Head switching,
and maintaining constant record/play back amplitude was
almost impossible. But by 1963 every ATC facility I knew
of had one or two. (Number 2 HD wooden pencil lead was
the best brush for the rotating heads.)
The RD-142, which used plastic tape, replaced the RD-115
which was a total loss. Never saw one that worked, and
they used 2 inch paper tape.
In 1963 I was at Kadena, and a civilian contractor came and
installed a few rack-mounted recorders for ATC use. They
were 16-channel on to a 3/4 inch (?) tape.
Trivia, but not a lot of people know what happens to the ATC
facilities when there is an aircraft accident, or an "incident" of
some kind.
First, the tower and ATC operators are immediately removed
from their posts, and escorted to the base medical facility where
they are given a bunch of exams. (This meant that these people
had to be replaced by anyone properly qualified for the jobs, and
this meant sifting through the barracks and the clubs, and rousting
qualified staff out of their easy chairs.)
Then, the voice recorder tapes were removed from the machines,
and stored in a safe for further inquiry.
Our Group Commander, a Colonel, was never happy when these
things happened, even though it wasn't our fault. The tape recorders
saved our butt on many an occasion.
End Of Trivia.
