Quick and dirty from my cell and without a diagram handy:
Remove 24 V from fil line.
Hook to B+ line through a pilot lamp... say, half an amp worth.
Wait 10-20 mins while
watching for signs.
Feel around for something hot.
Yes- really and no; I've never fried a transformer. I've fixed several this way.

Subject: [Milsurplus] BC-348-R SNAFU
I repaired the BFO in my rig (new bypass cap and associated resistor), and now it won't even let smoke out!
While running, the dyno output lugs down to 90V. I pulled the dyno and it appears to be fine when used on another rig (~240V, caps check OK).
Measuring across B+ and B- leads w/dyno still removed I get 370 ohms in all three switch positions AVC-OFF-MVC (varies by ~0.1 ohm).
I'm thinking a bypass cap doing this (B+, short to chassis, then from chassis to B- via the output stage audio transformer). Getting the same value in the OFF position suggests this to me.
Any ideas?
