Accumulated moisture, which caused oxidation and corrosion
once the dyno went into service.
I put a NOS PE-73 in service for a couple of hours once.
After being warned ( IIRC, by Mike Hanz), I let it cool, pulled an end-bell
off and poured about a teaspoon of WATER out of it!

If that has happened, only removing the winding and fixing the problem 
will correct it.    Isolate the windings.  Use a 28-volt supply through
a 24 volt lamp (or two twelve volters) to power between each 
winding and the case.   Any current draw and there's a problem.
Then compare the brightness of the lamp with it connected in series
with each winding.  The "brightest" one is the badie.
