Not in the actual instance of a word that is similar but spelled and
pronounced differently. But that should be an obvious distinction as
between the words sit and sh#t. Close, but not the same. In this case. one
beginning with sm, the other an sh sound. The 'conversion' would appear to
be more of a morfing into urban slang by casual use of the latter in place
of the former.
I believe Mike's original use of the term schmeg referred to the overall
pile of equipment that came from a varity of places around the fellow's
property; some of which were on the grungy/nasty side. Numerous pieces were
far from pretty as well. When you put it all together, the term fit it
well. Maybe like junky junk despite the good stuff hidden within. The fact
that schmeg has made its way into the urban dictionary doesn't change its
original meaning. Same goes for the word junk.
The similarity isn't lost on me. I'm just not one to stop using a word like
junk or schmeg because someone else has an alternative meaning they see as
the proper definition. And I have no doubt that some folks referred to the
pile of equipment as the 'smeg' pile for lack of knowing or caring what the
difference was. I'd laugh at that if I heard it, simply for the obvious
misuse.
Probably far too much time and brain power spent on a pretty pointless
subject, but it's rainy outside.

BTW, I think the term wallah! is a corruption of the word voila!, if that's
the way you're using it.
"I plug this tube in, add the crystal and wallah!(voila!) - it's a working
radio."
