You're right, it's not a nice word to be using.
Going way back, I'm told it's a Jewish word, and
originated in New York City in the late 1900's.
It's not a word one would hear in "The Fiddler
On The Roof."   Every language has their "not
so nice" words.  I learned a few while in Germany
with the USAF in the late 1940's.
