Perhaps as one gets older, one realizes how much more vulnerable you are,
and how devastating consequences can be.

Youth and inexperience breed contempt for danger and a sense of
invulnerability.

This is especially true if you have been coddled by parents or others who
praise your every action, irrespective of actual merit (like being awarded
a Nobel Prize BEFORE you even do anything), and are never held to
meaningful account by anybody for your screwups.
