Way back in the '50's there were articles in the
ham radio magazines about the problem with
the carbon in T-17's, and similar mics.
The carbon units I have examined while in the
employment of AT&T usually could be helped
by shaking up the carbon by whacking the edge
against a table top. The current through the
carbon, if it is too high over time, will cause the
granules to stick together. When carbon mics,
very large ones, were used in broadcasting, the
polarity of the battery was reversed regularly
to prevent clustering.
Another hint: The audio quality and over all
performance of most of these carbon mics can
be improved if the cover of the mic is gently
removed, and one or more of the little paper (?)
shims around the outside edge are removed.
This lowers the pressure of the carbon in its
little cup.
