[Milsurplus] To paint or not to paint ?

As an Outsider from the Collins side, here is my take.

You cannot go back...When we are fortunate enough to find a 68 or 70 year
old radio in pretty good condition that is either original or has its
"originality" modified by valid military provenance, we should lean heavily
towards leaving them alone.

First, Thay ain't makin' 'em any more.
Second, you can't go back.
Third, even when in original installs during the war, or shortly thereafter,
condition was never perfect, and there was often mix and match going
on...after all, they were there to use (and abuse - a little).

Showing some use is charm to me..

I vote don't paint - whenever you can avoid it.

Let's leave as many originals as we can for the next 4 generations to find.
Who EVER thought that these radios would still be in operation 70 years
after they were built...
I am betting some will still be going 140 years after construction - if
civilization lasts that long.

I used the RBA to copy RTTY.
It was grey. Leave it.

of the old photos I have found on the internet these were originally black.
I like black. So, I will present this loaded question to the list; do I
repaint the gray ones black wrinkle ? Or, does the fact that they may have
gone thru depot maintenance and re-painted with a more modern Navy gray
change the provenance forever ? I would hate to have all 3 on my desk with
one original black one in the middle... can you guess which way I'm leaning?
Of course, you must assume that I would do a decent paint job, and I have
already procured the "proper" Seymour black wrinkle.
