after his plane had run out of fuel and ditched after failing to find Canton
Island:
"One result of our ordeal was that it helped to get survival equipment
redesigned.
Life rafts were made wider and longer, carried sails and and such emergency
supplies as concentrated food, vitamins, first-aid kit, fishing tacklee, and
appropriate bait. They were also fitted with radios, and small chemical
distillers
capable of converting sea water into fresh water".
