Something I had never quite realized before: U.S. subs WW2 had no RDF
equipment.
I was just reading about a 1945 incident near Japan. Four U.S. subs were
trying
to locate an aircrew using a Gibson Girl. I believe the rescue radio was
dropped
along with a large liferaft, by a U.S. dumbo aircraft. The aircraft DF'd the
500
kc/s SOS signal and guided the subs to the raft. U.S.S. Tinosa was key
player
in the incident and heard if from the start, monitoring the bomber's mission
frequency, it heard the pilot radio that he was going to have to ditch.
