The US Air Force would be surprised to find that out. The Rome (NY)
Air Development Center at Griffiss Air Force Base initiated development
of the AN/PPN-17.
See RADC history at http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a250435.pdf
for this except that I posted here on 22 April:
"AN/PPN-17 Transponder Set: Under a contract with RADC, Avion
Electronics, Incorporated developed and produced the AN/PPN-17
transponder for use in Southeast Asia as a portable navigation aid
during night or conditions of low visibility. By May, Avion
Electronics had produced 19 units for evaluation."
FWIW, the term "Nam" would drive my Vietnam veteran friends crazy,
especially "the Nam". They universally say it's Hollywood-speak and
are merciless with anyone they hear using it. :-)
