Dave,

Technically, the Collins 51Q and 56Q are not the forerunners to the TCS.
They are the Collins in-house model numbers assigned. When sold to USN, they
were called TCS-nn, with "nn" mostly indicating different Contract Numbers
rather than changes to the equipment. All of the sets that Collins built
for the US military had Collins numbers in the nn-n or nnn-n format. Further,
at least based on photographs in the TCS and TCS-4 manuals, early
production for the Navy lacked TCS nameplates on the front panel and some are known
to have 51Q or 56Q on the rear of the sets. Or it could be that Collins
saved TM production costs by using civilian model photographs in the early
manuals.

That being said, can you answer the following questions:

Do the receiver and/or transmitter have posts in the corners or three
handles?
Are the 12-pin (receiver) or 16-pin (transmitter) male chassis power
connectors mounted to the front of the panel with four screws or are the
connectors attached with four screws to a stamped steel bracket which mounts to the
rear of the front panel with two screws?
Does the receiver have air core or iron core IF transformers?
Is one side of the transmitter RF Ammeter connected to chassis or to the
antenna post?
