The Wehrmacht didn't have a patent on that idea! Back in the '50s and 
'60s when I worked in a USAF depot maintenance shop we got tubes in bulk 
packs the same way. Mobile RAPCONs, etc, used gazillions of 5814s, 5881s 
and such tubes, so bulk packaging saved a LOT of tax-payer bucks as 
opposed to individual packaging.
