Thanks for all the advice, even if it wasn't quite what I had in mind.
This morning I stumbled onto this web site
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=_GLeCt_u3U8
about soldering to cup-type contacts.
What I really meant to be asking about, and one responder did make a
suggestion in this direction, is how to arrange the cable and connector
and workbench to make the job easier when it is a connector with many
pins. 50+ years ago I toured a factory where I remember women attaching
connectors to cable stock, but I don't remember the particulars of how
the work was arranged. Maybe the cable stock came down from overhead
so the connector could be face-down on the workbench, but I just don't
remember. So the advice I need is from somebody who has seen it done
in a factory. But I may just stumble through it like I have in the past.
I don't have any sleeving to put over the pins, so will just have to be
careful there isn't anything sticking out that will let them short
together.
