Mike,
The extra tube in the US-9 is an octal VR type tube (Russian tube
nomenclature SG-2S, 72 V firing voltage) for regulating the local oscillator
voltage. A much better solution than the 991 neon bulb in the Amerikanski
BC-348 receivers...
I have the schematic of the US-9. In fact, I have the whole manual in PDF.
I also have the schematic of the US-9DM model as well.

The Russki BC-348 copy has one more tube than the US original, at least
according to eBay pictures I have seen. Looks like they may have had
examples of both types of BC-348, and...
"What we do, Comrade?"
"Stalin says 'Make like Amerikanski or we go to Gulag!"
"We make like BOTH?"
"Da, Comrade!"
Anyone have a skematik of the US-9 (BC-348) receiver?
There are stories of how even repair patches to cover battle damage on the
impounded B-29s were copied... as well as the interior paint job. Seems the
factory had run out of green chromate primer, and painted part of the inside
of one B-29 with white lead. Supposedly the insides of Tu-4s were
green-and-white, as a result.
My source is a book titled "Soviet Superfortress" which can be found on
amazon.
