You can do some cool stuff with these, when you incorporate a switchboard gra39 or gsa7 you can do remote radio ops (net radio) from over 2 miles away!
As for the practical aspects there is a tone adaptor that will allow the ta312 to be used in a pots phone system.. TA-955/pt.. Murphy's surplus has them. I been using my ta312 as a desk phone for more than 2 years now :-)
