Here's a website that shows an example of a typical Franken-ARB ham conversion:

It references a CQ Magazine article from June 1958.  That article described an
extensive mod inflicted on the ARB.  (It was similar to what Roy Pafenberg
would do to surplus gear in the 1960s for 73 Magazine.)
