When I was stationed on the USS Intrepid in 1971, my "berthing" area
was directly aft of the starboard steam catapult.  It took some time
to accustom to that.

We had a 5-inch/38-caliber gun in the starboard forward gun tub just
outside my area, but those were never fired when I was on board.
